When are the Democratic debates? What channel are the 2019 Democratic presidential debates? Who has qualified for the Democratic debates?

The first major showdown of the 2020 presidential primary begins this week with two debates featuring the top 20 Democratic candidates (out of more than two dozen) all vying for a White House bid. The first Democratic presidential debate will feature 10 candidates on Wednesday, June 26; and 10 on Thursday, June 27; both will start at 9 p.m. ET, airing live from the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida.

How to watch the Democratic debates:

Both Democratic presidential debates will air live on NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo. The NBC broadcast network is available in the Syracuse area on the following TV channels:

  • Spectrum: Channel 3 (suburbs), 4 and 1203 (SD & HD)
  • Verizon Fios: Channel 503 (HD) and 3 (SD)
  • DirecTV: Channel 3 (SD & HD)
  • Dish Network: Channel 3 (SD & HD)
  • New Visions: Channel 603 (HD) and 3 (SD)
  • Antenna: Channel 3.1 (SD & HD)

The Democratic debates will also be available as a free live stream online through NBCNews.com, the NBC News apps, Telemundo, and NBC News' social pages on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Streaming will also be available through a cable or satellite TV subscription via Sling TV, fuboTV, Hulu with Live TV, Playstation Vue, YouTube TV and DirecTV Now; free trials are available through most services, some markets not available.

Additional coverage will be available before and after the debates on NBC, MSNBC and other networks, including cable news channels like CNN and Fox News.

2019 Democratic presidential debates schedule and lineup:

  • Former Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas
  • Former Rep. John Delaney of Maryland
  • Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City
  • Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio
  • Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii
  • Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota
  • Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey
  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts
  • Washington Gov. Jay Inslee

Thursday, June 27, from 9-11 p.m. ET

  • Author Marianne Williamson
  • Entrepreneur Andrew Yang
  • Former Vice President Joe Biden
  • Gov. John Hickenlooper of Colorado
  • Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana
  • Rep. Eric Swalwell of California
  • Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont
  • Sen. Kamala Harris of California
  • Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York
  • Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado

NBC said the lineups were selected via random drawing from candidates polling 2 percent or higher and those with less support so higher-profile and lesser-known candidates would appear each night. Candidates also had to hit 1 percent support in three state or national polls approved by the Democratic National Committee and raise money from 65,000 unique donors, with a minimum of 200 in 20 different states, which is why several candidates -- like Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts and Miramar, Florida mayor Wayne Messam -- were not invited.

Who are the moderators?

Five moderators will handle the questions for the 20 candidates: NBC News' Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie and Chuck Todd; MSNBC's Rachel Maddow; and Telemundo's José Diaz-Balart.

What topics will the debates cover? What's the format of the debate?

Topics will likely include policy, current affairs and President Donald Trump. It's unlikely candidates will have much time to truly "debate" the issues with such a large field, but the two-night event should help whittle the competition down.

NBC hasn't revealed too many format details ahead of time, but The Associated Press reports candidates will be allowed 60 seconds to answer questions and 30 seconds for follow-ups. They will also be allowed to make closing statements, but no opening statements.

NBC will have an offstage timekeeper trying to ensure fairness in how each candidate is treated, the AP added.
